Albertson, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team took a break from its preseason practices last week to make a visit to the Viscardi School, a K-to-12 regional school for students with disabilities.
The Adelphi coaches and student-athletes took in the first half of an alumni wheelchair basketball game, before partaking in the game themselves.
"I really enjoyed watching an amazing group of athletes play the sport they love. They are an inspiration and a reminder that -- with determination and motivation -- everything is possible,"Â said Adelphi student-athlete
Maura Carney.
Not only is a robust academic curriculum provided, the Viscardi School also offers a competitive wheelchair basketball program to its student body. The teams range between junior varsity, varsity, alumni and elementary "cubbies".
Fellow Adelphi student-athlete
Victoria Morgan reflected: "I enjoyed learning about the Henry Viscardi School and how they help kids with disabilities. it was very inspiring watching them not let their disabilities get in the way of having fun and doing what they like,"
Founded in 1962, the Henry Viscardi School is an accredited model school that offers parents of children with severe physical disabilities and who often require life-sustaining medical treatment throughout the day, a traditional educational setting that provides rigorous academics and opportunities for personal growth and leadership development.
