Celebrating Ten Years in the NE10: Santiago, Baram Display Pure Dominance on the Mound

Garden City, N.Y. - The 2019-20 season marked our 10th year in the NE10, and to celebrate that milestone, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics is looking back on some of its most iconic moments and accomplishments with the conference.

When you look at the list of All-Americans that drapes the left-field fence at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field, the last two Panthers to earn the distinct honor have been T.J. Santiago and Ed Baram.

It's hard to argue that there -- other than Robert Nixon -- has been a more formidable pair to take the hill for the Adelphi University baseball team in the NE10.

In 2017, Santiago set career-bests in almost every pitching category. Most notably, Santiago fanned 81 batters to raise his career total to 242 strikeouts, tying Nixon for the most strikeouts all-time at Adelphi.

Santiago made 13 appearances that season and came away without giving up an earned run in nine of those trips. Along the way, he threw three complete-game shutouts, including a five-hit, 11-strikeout performance against Saint Anselm.

Additionally, Santiago tied for the league lead in wins (8) and shutouts (3) and posted the third-lowest ERA (1.51) of any hurler in the NE10, ultimately leading to his selection as the NE10, ECAC, and D2CCA and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year.

He was the first pitcher since Richard Mejia in 2014 to be named an NCBWA and a D2CCA All-American. Santiago ranks in the Top 10 all-time at Adelphi in innings pitched (267.0), ERA (2.68) and appearances (51).

In 2019, Baram took his turn atop the Adelphi rotation. His efforts helped lead the Panthers to an impeccable 34-6-1 regular-season finish and the NE10 Southwest Division regular-season championship.

It was a season for the ages. Baram's ERA sat as low as 0.46 through nine starts, following a 25-inning stretch in the month of April where he didn't allow an earned run. He opened the year with back-to-back 10-strikeout games against STAC and Felician and proceeded to win six consecutive decisions after that, including eight shutout frames against Pace on Apr. 16.

Baram finished the season with a conference-best 1.32 ERA and tied for the second-most victories of any pitcher in the NE10 with seven. His 1.32 ERA ranks fifth-best all-time at the school, but is the second-lowest (Keith Couch -- 1.31 in 2009) of any Adelphi pitcher since 1975.

The tall 6-foot-3 right-hander overpowered hitters, to the tune of 79 strikeouts and a stingy .188 batting average against.

Baram -- like Santiago -- was showered with NE10, ECAC, and D2CCA and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year honors. He was also tabbed as the program's first-ever NCBWA First Team All-American, in addition to earning ABCA All-Region first-team and D2CCA All-America second-team accolades.

Baram went on to be drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 30th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft and became the first player drafted by an MLB franchise since Jonathan Mulford (St. Louis Cardinals, 34th Round) in 2016.
