Millsboro, Del. - In a tournament littered with nationally-ranked teams, the No. 25 Adelphi University women's bowling team tested its mettle before the holiday break at the UMES Hawk Classic this past weekend at Millsboro Lanes.
Each of its opponents appeared in the NTCA Preseason Top 25, but Adelphi came away with a 5-4 finish over the first two days of competition.
The Panthers (24-20) opened the tournament with a pair of impressive five-game Baker victories against No. 7 Youngstown State University (941-920) and No. 14 Delaware State University (998-900), and won three of five traditional matches the following day, which included a season-high pinfall in a 1,058-1,011 win over No. 12 Sacred Heart University.
Along the way, Adelphi posted its second-highest Baker strike (40.4 percent) and spare-conversion rate (62.3 percent) of the year and shot a season-best traditional average of 206.0 in the 10th frame.
Megan Wehmeier and three-time ECC Rookie of the Week
Blanca Fraticelli both bowled a 900 series in traditional play. Wehmeier led the Panthers with a 19.46 frame average and threw nearly half her balls (24-of-50) for strikes, as well.
In limited action,
Stephanie McCoy (208.3) and
Kristen Derr (200.6) each exceeded 200.0 averages, on the strength of achieving marks at a respective 91.7 and 83.9 percent clip.
While Wehmeier rolled a team-leading 191.9 average in the Baker format, Fraticelli posted a season-best 83.3 fill percentage and converted an exceptional 24-of-26 single-pin spare attempts (92.3 percent).
Once the calendar flips to 2022, the Panthers will then make their return, re-commencing Jan. 22-23 at the Seahawk Invitational, hosted by Wagner College, in Staten Island, N.Y.
