Coram, N.Y. - Over the weekend, the Adelphi University women's bowling team welcomed fifteen programs from across the collegiate landscape to Coram Country Lanes on Long Island for the inaugural DezyStrong Classic.
While the three-day tournament schedule gave way to numerous matches between Top 25 nationally-ranked teams, it didn't take away from the main goal of the weekend.
A total of $5,000 was raised for the DezyStrong Foundation, in honor of
Dennis Kearney's long-time friend Matt DiStefano, to support cancer awareness.
Prior to the tournament, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics produced a video feature that chronicled Kearney and DiStefano's close relationship. A post-event video recap will be released this week.
"We are honored to have had this opportunity to raise $5,000 for not only a great foundation, but a great friend," said Kearney. "Dezy was not only a leader and a warrior, but he will forever be a legend in our hearts."
"We would like to thank everyone involved, as well as the DiStefano family and the DezyStrong Foundation, for collaborating with us on this worthy cause," Kearney continued. "We will continue to carry on Matt's message as we go forward."
On the lanes, the Panthers finished 4-9 across the three days of bowling. Ten of their thirteen matches came against a Top 25 nationally-ranked opponent, including a tournament-high 1,035 pinfall against No. 22 Prairie View A&M.
Reigning ECC Rookie of the Week
Blanca Fraticelli led all Adelphi bowlers with respective averages of 184.8 and 214.1 in Baker and traditional formats. Her fill percentage in traditional play stood at a scintillating 88.9 percent.
Additionally, Fraticelli converted 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) makeable spares, 6-of-8 (75.0 percent) single-pin spares and 9-of-10 (90.0 percent) multi-pin makeable spares in traditional competition.
Kearney and the Panthers now have a week off before heading to Lodi, N.J. for the Falcon Fall Classic, hosted by Felician University from Nov. 13-14 at Lodi Lanes.
