Garden City, N.Y. - When the Adelphi University baseball team plays Molloy College in a fall ball game on Oct. 9, it will mean more than just two neighboring rivals squaring off on the diamond.
To commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the two programs will come together for an 11 a.m. charity game at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field to benefit the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund. Tickets are $10 each for admission and t-shirts will be sold at the gate.
The fund was established in the memory of Terry Farrell, who answered the call as a New York City firefighter on Sept. 11, 2001 and lost his life in the tragic attacks on the World Trade Center.
Among the 343 heroes who perished on that fateful day, Farrell was at 2 World Trade Center when it collapsed.
Since its inception, the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund assists firefighters and families across the nation with financial, educational and medical support, and provides equipment donations for fire departments in need.
To date, a total of nearly $2 million has been raised for the cause. Ten chapters of the Terry Fund have also opened across the country.
"The Adelphi University baseball program is very pleased to be working with our friends at The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund for our annual fall charity game," said Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello. "We have joined with Molloy College to raise funds that will contribute towards the needs of firefighters and their families. We also hope to further awareness of this highly worthwhile cause."
Two of Terry's brothers, Kevin and Dennis, will be in attendance to address the crowd on the mission of the Terry Fund and throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
