Garden City, N.Y. - After a decorated playing career at Adelphi,
Rebecca Fakas has been appointed to lead the University's men's and women's tennis programs, it was announced by Director of Athletics and Recreation
Danny McCabe on Monday.
Fakas' playing resume included an NE10 All-Conference selection in each of her four seasons with the Panthers and culminated with an NE10 Player of the Year honor. She was also twice named the NE10's Most Outstanding Player and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in her career, while helping lead Adelphi to three-consecutive NE10 Championship titles.
Fakas had spent two seasons as an assistant coach, before assuming the role of interim head coach late in the fall.
"We are thrilled to welcome Rebecca as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Adelphi. Rebecca is one of our most successful tennis student-athletes and has always remained close to the program, even while serving the department as a graduate assistant in the compliance area," McCabe said. "She has a firm grasp on NE10 tennis and has been intricately involved in our recruiting as an assistant coach. We are confident that Rebecca will lead this program and assist our student-athletes to become champions on the court and in the community."
"I'm very excited to take on the head coach position at Adelphi, after serving as assistant coach for the past two years," Fakas commented. "I would like to thank Athletic Director
Danny McCabe and the rest of the administration for giving me this great opportunity and trusting me to take both programs to the next level. Adelphi holds a special place in my heart, having played here during my collegiate career, and I am honored to continue to build on the success both teams have had, both on the court and academically."Â
Fakas will make her head coaching debut with the men's tennis team on Wednesday, Feb. 19, when the Panthers open their 2020 spring schedule at Queens College at noon.
