Baram Selected by Oakland Athletics in MLB Draft

Oakland, Calif. - Ed Baram's dream of playing professional baseball was realized on Wednesday.

The right-handed pitcher from Saddle Brook, N.J., who just concluded his four-year career with the Panthers, was selected in the 30th round of this year's MLB amateur player draft by the Oakland Athletics.

He is the first Adelphi baseball player to be drafted by an MLB team since Jonathon Mulford ('16) was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

"I would just like to thank all my teammates, coaches, family and friends for all the support throughout the years, I couldn't have done any of this without them," said Baram.

"I'd also like to thank the Athletics for believing in me and and taking a shot on me. This is something I will never forget and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for me."

He is the 23rd player in team history to join the professional ranks, including independent baseball, and the ninth in head coach Dom Scala's tenure to be drafted by a major-league club.

Ironically, Scala was also drafted out of St. John's University by the Athletics in 1976.

"I'm very happy for Ed, his dad, and the program," Scala said. "From day one, I felt as though he was someone who had a shot at professional baseball. He matured mentally, as well as physically, this year to put together one of the best pitching displays in Adelphi history and lead us to a national ranking of No.5

"Pitching coach Cameron Sorgie did great work with Ed on and off the field, and with his body type and potential, he has every chance to be a big leaguer."

Baram, the 914th overall pick, earned a host of postseason honors at the close of his senior season, after finishing with a 7-2 record and a Division II-leading 1.32 ERA.

The Northeast-10 Conference's Pitcher of the Year, Baram was also named the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) East Region Pitcher of the Year, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Pitcher of the Year and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Pitcher of the Year.

He was also named a First Team All-American by the NCBWA, a Second Team All-American by the D2CCA and a First Team All-Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

In his four-year career, Baram posted an 18-13 record in 244.1 innings, with 226 strikeouts and a career ERA of 2.62. His career strikeout total ranks fifth in school history.
