Women's Lacrosse Sets Date for Alumni Play for a Cause Game

2/6/2019 10:41:00 AM

Garden City, N.Y. - On a day that will end a storied era of action between Adelphi University women's lacrosse and the Pioneers of LIU Post, the alumni for both teams will match up for the third-annual Play for a Cause game on Saturday, March 30.

The day will start with a meeting of the teams' alumni at 11:00 a.m. followed by regular season action featuring the Pioneers and the Panthers at 1:00 p.m. The department welcomes all alumni back on this day, and will specifically recognize the 2009 Division II National Champions at halftime of the contest for their 10-year anniversary.

Adelphi topped LIU Post in the National Semifinal in 2009, en route to their third Division II title over Lock Haven. 2018 Hall of Fame Inductee Rachel Ray was a senior on the team, and set two NCAA records - most assists in a NCAA tournament game and most assists in a tournament (8)- helping lead the Panthers to a 15-10 victory over the Pioneers.

The Brown and Gold became the first school in Division II to capture three national titles on May 17, 2009 in Salem, Virginia on the campus of Roanoke College. The Panthers ripped off six straight goals against Lock Haven that day to enter the half with a 9-2 lead and put the game away en route to a 16-4 victory. That win gave Adelphi a spotless 18-0 record in 2009, with their first National Championship since 2006.

All Adelphi women's lacrosse alumni are invited to a post-game happy hour, sponsored by the coaching staff at Kasey's Kitchen and Cocktails in Rockville Centre, N.Y. starting at 4:00 p.m..
