Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University athletic department partnered with Shaw Sports Turf for the installation of a new hybrid synthetic turf system on Motamed Field, which was completed just in time for the spring sports season which is slated to begin Thursday.

The five-week project also included repairs to the roof of the underground parking garage and an expansion joint, spearheaded by University Facilities.

Shaw Sports Turf has done projects for high profile schools including Louisiana State University, University of Missouri, Limestone College and Vanderbilt University.

The new turf system will provide a safer surface for the athletes, while maintaining the ability to host multiple sports throughout the year. Currently, Motamed Field is utilized 12 months a year and is the home for Adelphi's NCAA Division II women's soccer, men's soccer, women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse and field hockey programs. Additionally, Motamed Field is used by the entire University as it hosts Adelphi's club sport programs, intramural athletics, physical education classes and University special events such as orientation.

"We are excited to have partnered with Shaw, University Facilities and the Finance Office to get this project completed before the start of the spring sports season and to be able to provide best there is to offer in safety and playability," said Danny McCabe, Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation.

"Motamed Field is not only home to Adelphi's nationally-ranked NCAA DII programs, but also hosts various club sports, intramural program and physical education classes at the University. With this new turf, Motamed Field will remain one of the best competition venues on Long Island."

On June 14, 2010, the Board of Trustees of Adelphi University approved the naming of its athletic competition field as Motamed Field, in recognition of the generous support Mr. Motamed has given to the University and his leadership of its Board of Trustees.

The first official game on the new turf will feature Adelphi men's lacrosse versus Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption on Saturday, February 16 at 1:00 p.m.
