Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Garden City, N.Y. - Following yesterday's 11-6 victory over NYIT in Old Westbury, the Adelphi University baseball team was unable to win the series on home turf, and fell to the Bears in both games of the non-conference doubleheader, 14-13 and 6-1.

In game one of the day, NYIT (11-23-1) put up 11 runs in the fourth inning, taking a massive lead over Adelphi (23-16-1). Although battling back across the final innings, and cutting the visitor's lead to one run in the ninth, the Panthers ultimately fell to the Blue and White in a wild one, 14-13. The second half of Sunday's double header showed Adelphi (23-16-1) putting up one solo run and NYIT finishing with six to claim the series win over the Panthers.

Across the doubleheader, Brett Malm with 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, and was the lone Panther to record more than one hit in game two. In the opener, Steven Withers, Tyler Becker and Lucas Terwilliger went a combined 8-for-15 with five runs scored at the top of the order, while Lawrence Cicileo and Thomas Colombo went 5-for-9 with six RBIs and four runs scored

Game 1: NYIT- 14 AU- 13

Despite falling behind 2-0 after three innings, the Bears made a statement with a mammoth fourth frame, scoring 11 of their 14 runs. For the Panthers, a single by Withers later earned him a run following a double play groundout by Lucas Terwilliger in the opening inning, while the second run of the day was credited to Withers once again after Malm was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third.

The Bears' 11-run rally followed in the next frame, beginning with a passed ball with the bases loaded following three singles. With runners on the bags for the next five at-bats, a single and an error by the Panthers gave NYIT the lead, 3-2, and two more runs were tallied on walked batters at the hand of Ed Baram.

Jake Lebel tacked two more on off a single to center field as Baram gave way to Nicolas Luc, and a bases clearing double off the bat of Kuskowski, made the game 10-2. One more RBI single from the Bears capped off the visitors' outstanding inning, as 16 men came to bat and recorded seven hits and three walks.

A fighting Adelphi offense would not go quietly, scoring in five of the final six innings, but ultimately could not complete the comeback in the bottom of the ninth.

Following base hits by Terwilliger and Malm, Cicleo's double to left center cut the NYIT lead to seven runs, as the Panthers looked to battle back in the fifth. Colombo added one more to the board after roping an RBI single to right field, making the score 12-6, and the hosts tacked on four more following back-to-back doubles by Colombo and Cicileo in the seventh. Pinch-hitting Kevin Krippel got the Panthers at 10 runs in the final at-bat of the inning, singling to center to make it 13-10, but was thrown out at second to put an end to the frame.

With the Panthers only down by three runs, going to the bottom of the ninth, Tim O'Connor laced a single to center field to plate two, making it a one-run game with nobody out. However, the NYIT defense made a huge stand - thanks in part to catching pinch runner Michael Cattani stealing second - to retire the side and preserve the win.

Game 2: NYIT- 6 AU- 1

After securing the save to end game one, Brandon Alberto held the Panthers to just one run on six hits, two walks and a hit batter over seven innings of work.

Following a silent two innings, NYIT took advantage of a fielding error in the outfield and put up two runs off a double to left center by Ben McNeill. In the next at-bat, another double, this time to right center, by Lebel tacked on the Bears' third run to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, the Panthers responded with an RBI single off the bat of Becker, which broke up the shutout and brought home Withers who tripled to right center in the previous at-bat.

The Bears' final two runs came in the next frame after an RBI triple and a sac fly capped the Blue and White off at six runs. With Mark Novello and David Butler in relief of Michael Tarpey, in the final three frames, the freshman and senior combined to allow just one hit while striking out five batters.

The Brown and Gold will return to play on Tuesday against NE10 Southwest divisional foe, Southern Connecticut State University, at 3:30 p.m.
