Adelphi Athletics Unveils New Panthers Fueling Station for Student-Athletes

12/3/2018 8:00:00 AM

Garden City, N.Y.  - The Adelphi University athletics department continues to show its commitment to student-athletes' health and wellness and the overall student-athlete experience.

This fall, the department unveiled a new Panthers Fueling Station, designed specifically to help student-athletes supplement nutritional needs and refuel on a day-to-day basis. Located in the lower level of the Center for Recreation and Sport, the location makes it ideal for athletes to quickly grab items as they head to lift in the weight room or on their way to class.

The fueling station was proposed in early 2018 and made possible by a generous gift from university trustee Dennis McDonagh, '78. He was also an integral part of the creation of a brand new baseball clubhouse, which opened last spring.

Since the area opened officially this fall, assistant athletic director for sports medicine and head athletic trainer Mike Gavagan and head strength and conditioning coach Keith Ferrara man the day-to-day operations to keep it running smoothly. This includes inventory, stocking and student-athlete check-in.

"Being committed to studies and sport at such a high level demands elite-level time management skills," McDonagh said. "The fueling station's simple purpose of providing nourishment while training connects to our greater mission of empowering our student-athletes to perform their best in all areas of life during their time at Adelphi University."

Members of any of Adelphi's 23 varsity teams are able to pick up performance bars and recovery shakes before or after practice at the Panthers Fueling Station. Improved nutrition before and after practice is intended not only to improve training, but also to support physical recovery and academic efforts down the road.

"We are grateful to have supportive alumni like Dennis McDonagh who share our vision of providing the best possible experience for our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Danny McCabe. "Panther student-athletes are dedicated to constant improvement on the fields of play, in the classroom and in the community. This added feature allows them to re-fuel their bodies each day as they go from weight training to practices and to class."

Senior softball player and Student Athlete Advisory Committee co-president and treasurer Lauren Sandelier feels that the new addition gives the department a "new dynamic."

She added: "It provides us with the opportunity to 'fuel up' and take care of our bodies on a holistic level."
