Date Set for 16th Annual Black History Month Celebration

1/17/2018 1:43:00 PM

Garden City, N.Y. - Following tradition, the Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its 16th Annual Black History Month Dinner Celebration on Thursday, February 8, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The dinner this year will feature keynote speaker Perry Greene, Ph.D. who is the University's first Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. For Dr. Greene and his colleagues, diversity extends far beyond race and ethnicity. It encompasses the "broad array of the human experience in the people you have and the ideas and perspectives you include at the institution. But diversity won't work unless you have inclusion—unless the people feel welcome at the table."

Dr. Greene chaired the strategic planning work group that made recommendations for how Adelphi can become a model of diversity of inclusion. Initiatives and actions in the plan strive to boost the retention and recruitment of diverse students, faculty and staff; to adapt teaching practices for diverse learners; to enhance the first-year experience by including subjects such as cultural competence, racism and bias; and to assess the curriculum to determine whether and how it addresses diversity and inclusion.

Past keynote speakers include Curtis O. Minnis ('77), Managing Director of Global Sales for the Fedex Corporation; Chris Bernard ('99), Vice President, Player Development, Marketing and Team Operations; Wendy Lewis, Senior Vice President of Diversity and Strategic Alliances for Major League Baseball; Gianna Smith ('08), Community Relations Coordinator for the New York Knicks; former Adelphi Dean of Athletics and Head Track Coach Ron Bazil; Congressman Gregory Meeks ('75); author Patricia Elam ('76); Board of Trustees member Kenneth Banks ('74); Dr. N. Gerry House; attorney/author Alicia M. Crowe; NCAA VP for Diversity & Inclusion Charlotte Westerhaus; ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling and Herb Boyd and Eric Martin ('06), president of the Pendant Group.

The event consists of a buffet dinner in the Campbell Lounge located in the Center for Recreation and Sports. Over the years, with the assistance of the Multicultural Alumni Chapter, it has attracted many alumni back to campus, including many who had lost touch with the university. For more information and to purchase tickets, at $30 each, please contact Emily Dorko at edorko@adelphi.edu or (516) 877-4293.
