Manchester, N.H. - Senior
Rebecca Fakas earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at top flight singles as the Adelphi University women's tennis team handed Southern New Hampshire its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, 5-4 in Manchester.
The Panthers (7-1, 6-1 NE10) earned their fifth straight win, handing SNHU its first dual loss as well as conference defeat of the season. Both teams are chasing undefeated Stonehill at the top of the standings, the authors of Adelphi's lone loss on the season so far.
Adelphi's sweep in doubles was prevented by a mammoth tiebreak victory for Sofia Morais and Anna Sala in the top spot, as the Penmen (5-1, 5-1 NE10) pair edged Fakas and
Karen Serina in a tiebreak. Nonetheless, Adelphi held a 2-1 lead headed to singles, and SNHU never pulled even in the match after that point.
Nicole Kielan opened singles play for Adelphi with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No.3 spot, and after SNHU put another point on the board behind Sala,
Samantha Perri's 6-2, 6-4 win over Casey Burns, the first loss of the freshman's career, put the Brown and Gold one point away from the win. Fakas provided the clincher in the top spot, her seventh win in eight matches at the flight this season.
