Old Westbury, N.Y. -- Making its first appearance in the NCAA Division II East Regional since 2012, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell to the Chestnut Hill College Griffins by a 5-2 final on the campus of the New York Institute of Technology on Monday morning.
Adelphi (16-2) got off to a quick start in the match as
Rebecca Fakas and
Elena Nastasi won their 12th match of the season as a team with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. However, the Griffins edged out the other two doubles flights to take the lead headed to singles, as Laure-Anne Josso and Axe Owens defeated
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Samantha Perri in a tiebreak at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 and 7-2 in the breaker.
However, Perri leveled the match at 2-2 with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, but the Griffins quickly found themselves back in the lead as Louise Charley allowed Nastasi just one game at No. 6. From there, Chestnut Hill (15-9) also picked up a point at No. 2 and No. 1, as Lara Scholtze and Josso each surrendered just four games to Kallenberg and
Stefani Lineva, respectively, to claim the win.
"It wasn't the outcome we desired but we had a great spring season," Interim Head Coach
Joanna Haich stated. "The women have the summer now to enjoy and train in hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament next spring."
