Old Westbury, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University women's tennis team returned to action for the first time since winning the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Wednesday, and suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the nationally-ranked Bears of NYIT, 9-0.
The Panthers fell by a pair of 8-2 scores at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, as the duo of Alexandra Borgenhoff and Paulina Velasquez defeated
Rebecca Fakas and
Elena Nastasi by a score of 8-2 at third doubles before Justyna Krol and Alessia Rossetti recorded the same score against
Stefani Lineva and
Karen Serina at No. 1. The closest match of the day for Adelphi in doubles came at No. 2, as
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Samantha Perri were defeated by
Melanie Benyadl and Gabriela Siembab by an 8-4 score.
In singles action, Borgenhoff secured the first win for the Bears after blanking Nastasi, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, before Benyadl defeated Kallenberg 6-2, 6-0 at second singles and Siembab took care of Fakas, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot to make it a 6-0 match. At top flight, Rossetti got the better of Lineba again, 6-1, 6-1, while Velasquez took a tight 6-4 first set over Serina and led by a break of serve in the second before Serina retired from the match with an injury. Freshman Perri provided the closest completed match for the Brown and Gold on the day, as she fell to Krol at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3.
Doubles NOTES- The Bears are ranked #12 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
