Garden City, NY – Two teams that faced off in the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Final made for another competitive afternoon with sets of volleyball between Adelphi University and The College of Saint Rose. The Panthers won the thrilling match by a final of 3-2 (26-28, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 15-10) inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Each team traded leads throughout the first game, leading to a tied game at 24 and extending to extra points. An assisted block from Carissa Dube and Maddy Halverson followed by a kill from Dube secured a 28-26 win for the Golden Knights. Four Saint Rose individuals notched three kills while
Kaitlyn DeStefano paced the Panthers with four.
The Panthers responded early in the second game, jumping out to a 10-2 advantage with
Alayna Jackson and
Haley Blunt on the front end of several serves during that span. After increasing the lead to 20-9, the Golden Knights rallied on a 7-2 run to cut into the lead. The Brown and Gold closed for the 25-17 victory as Blunt led the team with three kills and five digs in the game.
Tied at one set a piece, Saint Rose controlled an early 12-7 margin to force a timeout by Adelphi in game three. The Panthers faced another deficit at 24-19 before rallying on a 5-0 run to tie. However, a kill from Jennifer Gundrum and an ace from Tori Daniels closed out the set 26-24 for the Golden Knights.
In the fourth, a narrow 18-17 lead for the Panthers grew to a 24-18 advantage as Blunt put down three kills over that stretch. The Panthers earned the 25-21 win to force a fifth set on a service error by Saint Rose. Joining Blunt and DeStefano with three kills in the set was Sam Breidenbach to make up nine of the team's 13 kills.
Adelphi lead 8-5 at the bench switch during the fifth set off of a kill from
Mandy Stanislovaitis. The momentum continued through the rest of the set with the Panthers claiming the clinching point on an attacking error.
"That was a big win for us as Saint Rose is a very good conference and region program," said Head Coach
Danielle MacKnight. "I think if we maintain this level of play, it should prove for continued success."
The Panthers are back on the road this Tuesday with a 7:00 pm league match at Assumption in Worcester, MA.
