Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team kicked off their weekend series with the University of New Haven Friday afternoon on William J. Bonomo Field. After tying it up in the bottom of the sixth, the teams played out six additional innings until the Panthers were able to score in the bottom of the 12th. The win improves the Brown and Gold to 21-19 on the season and 13-10 in the NE-10, clinching a spot in the playoffs, while the Chargers slide to 20-11 on the season and 15-9 in league play.
Nick Zito,
Cliff Brantley and
Richard Mejia all registered multiple hits in the victory over the New Haven Chargers. Going 1-for-1 with two RBIs was
Alex Zykoff, who blasted his first home run in a Panther uniform in the bottom of the sixth inning.
TJ Santiago completed 7.0 complete innings, scattering 10 hits for just three Charger runs.
Matt Abramowitz closed the game for the Brown and Gold, firing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief while collecting seven strikeouts along the way.
The Panthers were the first to jump on the board after
Eric Hassell and
Kyle Ambury got themselves on base in the bottom of the second inning. Designated hitter
Robert Vani drove a ballup the middle plating Hassell to take a 1-0 lead. The University of New Haven were quick to respond as they managed to push across one run in the top of the third, fourth and the sixth innings.
After Hassell drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, Zykoff blasted a pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at three apiece. The next five and a half innings would remain scoreless until the Panthers threw on their rally-caps in the bottom of the twelfth inning.
Vincent Sharkey hit a ground ball to the right side, but
Michael Stack was too fast for the Charger defense to get out at second, making each safe with two outs. The New Haven bullpen made the choice to intentionally walk Brantley, which brought
Kevin Hutzel to the plate with one out. A line drive over second base and into centerfielder plated Stack, giving Adelphi the walk-off, playoff-spot clinching win.
The team will return to action tomorrow as they finish the New Haven series, with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. Livestats for the game will be available
