Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y.-A walk-off in the second game highlighted a doubleheader sweep, 3-1 and 1-0, for the Adelphi University softball team versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State University earlier today at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Five Panthers collected two hits throughout the afternoon. Three of the individuals picked up an RBI as the Panthers moved to 13-9 overall with a 7-2 conference mark. The pitching combination of freshman
Lindsay Mapes and senior
Katie Andrews proved pivotal in the sweep for the Brown and Gold. Andrews was credited with the game one save and the victory in the nightcap behind 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, Mapes started both games and threw 11.1 innings with seven strikeouts with just one run surrendered that included the opening win.
The Owls fell to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the league with the two decisions. Freshman catcher Danielle Piazza and junior infielder Nicole Buch each went 2-for-6 on the afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Yesenia Evaristo pitched six scoreless innings in the second game with strikeouts for the no decision.
Freshman infielder Leanna Feerick allowed Southern Connecticut the early 1-0 lead in the opener with a solo homerun in the second inning. However, Adelphi responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to take the lead for good. Freshman outfielder
Niki Barbato singled up the middle to plate junior infielder
Victoria Wink for the first run. Later, Andrews scored the eventual game-winning run off of a double down the left field line from sophomore first baseman
Jordan Catalano.
Sophomore outfielder
Courtney Sullivan provided the insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a single to score freshman
Christina Palmenteri, who was in to pinch run.
Mapes pitched the first 5.0 innings for the win and move to 4-5 overall while Andrews came on for the final two frames to picked up her second save of the season.
A pitcher's duel ensued in the finale as Evaristo surrendered two hits through 6.0 inning of work for the Owls while Mapes and Andrews combined allowed four in 7.0 innings. The table was set for a walk-off for the Panthers in the bottom of the seventh.
After Barbato hustled out an infield single, Catalano came to the plate looking to push Barbato to second with a sacrifice bunt. However, Catalano laid down a perfect bunt that forced the Southern Connecticut catcher to force a throw to first that went beyond the reach of the receiving fielder, scoring Barbato all the way from first and closing out the victory.
Looking ahead, Adelphi begins three straight doubleheaders on the road with a two-game set this Saturday, April 5 at Assumption in Worcester, MA. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
