Baseball Tops Pace in 3-1 Victory

Jonathon Mulford pitched seven complete innings, scattering just three hits for one run and struck out six in the 3-1 victory.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - Following three postponed games, the Adelphi University baseball team returned to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they traveled to Pace University for a Southwest Division contest. A 3-1 victory over the Setters improves the Panthers to 8-10 overall, 4-3 in the Northeast-10 and 2-1 in divisional play. The Blue and Gold fall to 4-10 on the season and 1-1 in Southwest division action.

Sophomore Jonathon Mulford started on the hill for Adelphi, scattering three hits for one run in 7.0 complete innings of work. The Massapequa native faced just three Pace batters every inning for six consecutive innings. Offensively the squad was led by Vincent Sharkey, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kyle Ambury had a 1-for-3 outing, picking up two RBIs in the victory.

The two teams remained scoreless through five innings until the Brown and Gold were able to take advantage of a pair of Setter miscues in the top of the fifth. Sharkey drew a walk to lead off the inning, followed by a Michael Stack attempt at a SAC bunt, which turned into the first error for Pace to give Adelphi first and second. A consecutive error caused Cliff Brantley to reach safely, sending Sharkey home.

With two outs in the same inning, Ambury singled to left center as Kevin Hutzel and Brantley crossed home. The hosts would push one run across in the bottom of the seventh inning,on two hits- at the same time stranding two on base at the conclusion of the inning. John Donnelly and TJ Santiago took on reliever duties as they combined for no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings.

The squad will return to action as they travel to Massachusetts this weekend for back-to-back doubleheaders against Stonehill College (4/5) and Bentely University (4/6).
