Winter Haven, FL - The Adelphi University softball team continued play at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida on Sunday, March 9 with contests against #5 Augustana College and Glenville State College at the Diamond Plex. Adelphi dropped a, 11-1 decision to the Vikings in the first game of the day and then rallied in extra innings to steal a 4-2 decision from the Pioneers.
Â
Adelphi vs. #5 Augustana
The Vikings jumped on Adelphi early, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a Panther miscue and back-to-back singles, putting the Brown and Gold in a 3-0 hole. Augustana added a fourth run in the second, courtesy of three hits and took advantage of two more hits, including a triple in the third to push their lead to 4-0.
Â
Two fifth inning singles made the count 8-0, but Adelphi worked two, one out walks in the bottom of the fifth to give Jackie Binstock a chance to do some damage. Binstock stroke a single to right field, scoring
Mary O'Reilly, but that was all the Panthers would get in the fifth, 8-1. The Vikings would tack on three more runs in the top of the seventh and hold Adelphi scoreless the rest of the way, handing the Panthers an 11-1 setback.
Â
Binstock collected both of Adelphi's hits in the game, going 2-3 with an RBI.
Katie Andrews was saddled with the loss, throwing two innings, and giving up seven runs on seven hits, striking out one.
Lindsay Mapes tossed five innings of relief, striking out six, walking one, and allowing four runs on eight hits.
Â
Adelphi vs. Glenville State
The Brown and Gold kicked-off play against the Pioneers with back-to-back singles from Binstock and
Danielle Cutuli, which allowed Binstock to cross home, on a Glenville State error. Cutuli was driven home two batters later when Andrews laced a single to right, building a 2-0 lead for the Panthers.
Â
Glenville State managed to knot the game at two in the bottom of the third with two hits and some aggressive base running, 2-2. From there it became a pitchers dual, with both teams remaining deadlocked at two thanks to four scoreless innings that sent the game into extra frames.
Â
In the top of the eighth, a Wink pop-up to short allowed Binstock, who was standing on second thanks to the international tie breaker rule, to scamper home and put Adelphi on top. The Panthers added a second run when a passed ball put Wink on third and an Andrews drive, plated Wink, 4-2.
Â
The bottom half of the eighth was taken care of by Andrews, who tossed five innings of spotless relief to collect her second win of the season, striking out six and giving up just four hits. Andrews also did some damage with the bat, going 2-3 with two RBI, while Binstock was 1-4 with two runs scored and Wink was 1-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
