Baseball Falls to NCBWA No. 17 Wilmington University, 9-1

The Panthers were aggressive at the plate, but unable to push more than one run across.

Box Score Palm Beach, FL – The Adelphi University baseball team faced the Wilmington University Wildcats, who were ranked 17th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll, Friday afternoon. The Wildcats scattered 13 hits to Adelphi's three, to pick up a 9-1 victory. They improve to 7-2-1 overall as the Panther fall to 1-2.

Only three Panthers registered hits this afternoon, as Cliff Brantley, Michael Stack and Chad Houghton had one apiece. Sam Goines led the offense for the Wildcats, collecting three hits and three RBIs as teammate Jon Castro had two hits and three RBIs of his own. Winning pitcher Frank Samluk earned one run in seven innings of work, facing 24 batters.

Wilmington was first to hop on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff Christian Adorno singled to center and would be brought in later on a Goines single that dropped in behind second, along with Josh Hampton to go up 2-0.

The Brown and Gold wouldn't get an opportunity to answer until the third inning as Houghton lead off with a double to centerfield. A Vincent Sharkey sac hit would advance him to third, to be later brought in by Stack, who picked up the RBI in the loss. Adelphi trailed 3-1 heading into the fourth inning.

Samluk retired three Panthers in a row to give the Wildcats another opportunity to score. After the first batter of the inning reached first on a single to right, Jonathon Mulford picked him off and struck the next batter out looking. A simple ground ball to Richard Mejia would get Adelphi out of the inning and back to the plate.

A Castro triple in the bottom of the sixth earned him three RBIs, ultimately sealing the deal for the Wildcats. Adelphi would give up only one more run in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to push across any runs of their own.

The team returns to action on Sunday, March 9 to face the Wilmington Wildcats for the second time. The game will be played at Barry University located in Miami Shores at 6 p.m.
