Purchase, N.Y. - The Adelphi University swim program traveled north yesterday, Thursday, October 23, to Purchase, New York, opening the 2014-15 season with a sweep of the host SUNY Purchase Panthers. The men came away with a convincing 119-65 win, while the women out distanced the Panthers 108-88.Â
The women had four different swimmers double dip into the win column, leading Adelphi to victory.
Morgan McCurdy dominated the 1000 yard freestyle, with a winning time of 11:34.11, 50 seconds better then teammate
Kelly Whelan in second. She followed that up with a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a clocking of 1:09.27.
Danielle Dreiss took control of the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle, turning in winning times of 58.62 and 2:05.10.Â
Heather Miller kept the parade of Brown and Gold winners rolling, taking top honors in the 50 yard freestyle (26.68) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.45), while
Jacqueline Vani closed out the barrage of Adelphi first place finishes with wins in the 500 yard freestyle (5:46.92) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:22.25). Vani and Dreiss were also members of the winning 200 yard medley relay and were joined by
Kayla Tusa and
Amanda Crosby, touching the wall at 2:03.30, over four seconds ahead of the hosts.
The men had five different individuals collect victories, while
Michael Mayer and
Zachary Mazur doubled up with two wins. Mayers triumphs came in the 200 yard individual medley, where he turned in a performance of 2:08.50, and the 100 yard backstroke, with a clocking of 1:00.63. Mazur was tops in the 50 yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 23.13 and the 100 yard butterfly, slipping under the one minute mark at 57.70.
Gerard Theophilidis picked up a comfortable win in the 1000 yard freestyle for Adelphi, touching the wall at 11:34.11, over 30 seconds ahead of second place, while teammate
Peter D'Ortenzio was the fastest through the water in the 100 yard freestyle, turning in a time of 52.55.
John Rotolo closed out the victory march for the Brown and Gold with a win in the 500 yard freestyle, thanks to a time of 5:13.50.
The Panthers 200 yard medley relay was also a winner, kicking the meet off with a dominant showing, thanks to the efforts of Mayer, D'Ortenzio, Josef Sarabia and
John Bellotti, who stopped the clock at 1:44.05, over 20 seconds ahead of the hosts.
Adelphi returns to the pool on November 1 in their first home meet of the season against Montclair State University at 1:00 pm in historic Woodruff Hall.Â
