Lowell, Mass. - The Adelphi University baseball team lost both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader, 9-0 and 9-5, against UMass Lowell at LeLacheur Park on Saturday. The Panthers dip to 11-14-1 overall while the River Hawks jump to 16-10-1 on the season.
UMass Lowell starting pitcher Taylor Robinson's complete game shutout proved the highlight of the opener as the hurler allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out six in the blanking of the Panthers. Joe Consolmango led the way at the plate for the hosts with a six-hit day, including a triple, three RBI and six runs scored.
For Adelphi,
Richard Mejia ripped three hits over two games with a triple and three RBI in the nightcap, while
Ray Triano batted 2-4 in the second game with a run, RBI and free pass. Errors hurt the Panthers as seven miscues in game one compounded seven walks issued by Adelphi pitchers.
Chris Pabisch suffered the loss in the opener, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 frames, and
Stephen Bove was saddled with the setback in the second contest in three innings of work.
Game One
The River Hawks struck first in the opener on a James Katsiroubas RBI triple in the bottom of the third. Both teams went quietly in the fourth but UMass Lowell pushed across another run in the fifth, this time on Consolmango's base hit to center. The hosts proceeded to score eight times over a three-inning span, with a pair in the sixth on a single and a fielding error followed by a five-run outburst in the seventh. A single, an error and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one down, and an RBI groundout gave the River Hawks a 5-0 advantage. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Jacob O'Keefe, who laced a two-run single to left for a pair of unearned runs. A wild pitch and three consecutive walks forced in three more runs to give UMass Lowell a 9-0 lead.
Robinson settled in comfortably from the sixth on and retired the final 13 Adelphi batters he faced.
Game Two
The River Hawks staked an early lead in game two as well with a three-run first, powered by a trio of one-run singles. The Panthers grabbed their first two runs of the day in the top of the third to make it a 3-2 game, as
Anthony Infante reached on a leadoff single, Triano got aboard on a two-out fielding error and Mejia brought home a pair with a base hit. UMass Lowell matched Adelphi's two-run effort with a pair of runs in its half of the third. Two straight singles and a fielder's choice put runners on second and third with one out and Pat Devlin plated a run with an RBI base hit to left. After a fielder's choice, Katsiroubas scored from third on a wild pitch to put the hosts in front 5-2.
Another two-run frame in the fourth spelled a 7-2 advantage for the River Hawks thanks to a walk, two hits and two stolen bases, all with two outs. Consolmagno and Katsiroubas delivered again, each posting RBI singles to stretch the UMass Lowell lead. Adelphi cut the deficit to two with three runs in the fifth, beginning with
John Campbell's leadoff triple down the leftfield line. Triano brought Campbell home with a base hit, and one out later, Mejia knocked an RBI triple to make it 7-4.
Nick Zito followed with a groundout to second that allowed Mejia to score from third and bring the tally to 7-5.
Adelphi would get no closer however, as the River Hawks scored an unearned each in the sixth and eighth to reach a final score of 9-5.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they head to Merrimack College for an NE-10 non-division doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
