Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to regional foe Caldwell College on Wednesday, April 17 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers dropped game one, 3-2 after a late Cougar rally, but responded with a 4-3 walk-off win in the second game. The split leaves Adelphi with a record of 31-10 overall, while Caldwell sits at 32-5.
Game One
Caldwell got on the board early, using a one out single to right in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning when
Katie Andrews hit a single to center that scored
Emily Dorko, 1-1. The next few innings would slip by scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Adelphi got back-to-back doubles from Wink and Andrews to take a 2-1 lead, that put the Panthers just three outs from a win.
However, the Cougars battled back in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs. The first came across home plate when the batter out ran a hard hit ball to short, while what would be the winning run scored when a ball dropped into open space in left field, 3-2. Adelphi went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, giving Caldwell the victory.
Devon Kelly was credited with just her fifth loss of the year, throwing seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Dorko, Wink and Andrews picked up two hits each, with Andrews driving in two runs and Dorko and Wink scoring one each.
Game Two
Adelphi and Caldwell played two and a half innings of scoreless softball, when the Panthers broke through, as
Amy Caird scampered home on a hard hit ground ball out from
Heather Salerno, 1-0. The game would remain that way into the seventh when the Cougars managed to put three runs on the board with a single up the middle and then a deep fly to left field that scored two runners, 3-1.
However, the Brown and Gold responded in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases with not outs. Salerno got the scoring started by working a walk, to bring pinch runner
Courtney Sullivan across home plate, halving the margin, 3-2. Wink would follow that up with a sacrifice fly to right, that scored Caird, knotting the action at three apiece. That brought Andrews to the plate, who was intentionally walked, loading the bases again with
Jeanine Leo up and two outs. With two strikes and the bases loaded Leo hit a rope to deep left field, scoring Dorko and giving Adelphi a walk-off 4-3 win.
Laurin Watts picked up her 15th win of the season, going the distance with four strikeouts and five walks. Dorko led the offense, going 4-4 with a run scored, while Leo was 2-4 with the game winning rbi.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, April 19 when they play host to conference opponent AIC at 4:00 pm on Janet L. Ficke Field.
