Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - The Adelphi University softball team took on Wayne State (MI) and LIU-Post on the fifth day of their spring trip to Florida at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimmee. The Panthers dropped the first game, 4-2 to the Warriors, but rebounded to pick up a 6-0 shut out win over the Pioneers. Adelphi's overall record is now 9-5.
Adelphi vs. Wayne State
The Warriors opened the game with a double to left center and two batters later a double to left field would drive in Wayne State's first run of the game. In the bottom of the third Adelphi would answer, knotting the game at one when
Victoria Wink drove in
Emily Dorko thanks to a double of her own, 1-1.
After two scoreless inning the Warrior managed to tack two more runs onto their total with a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle, putting the Panthers in a 3-1 hole. In the bottom of the sixth
Meghan Heiser would cut that margin in half with a lead off solo shot over the wall in left center, but that is as close as Adelphi would get, 3-2. The Warriors would add a fourth run in the top of the seventh and the closes the Panthers would get to scoring is placing Dorko on second, 4-2.
Katie Andrews was saddled with the loss, her second of the year after throwing a complete game, striking out two, walking one and giving up seven hits. Dorko accounted for three of Adelphi's eight hits, going 3-4 with a run scored, while Heiser and Wink both had one hit and one RBI.
Adelphi vs. LIU-Post
The Panthers jumped on the Pioneers early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Dorko scored the first run when a Heiser pop up to second was misplayed, allowing Dorko to score from second. The second run came across the plate when
Jeanine Leo worked a bases loaded walk, bringing in Heiser, 2-0 Panthers.
After a scoreless second the Brown andn Gold tacked on three more runs in the top of the third.
Jaclyn Binstock scored the first run on a throwing error by the pitcher that allowed Andrews to reach first safely and gave Binstock plenty of time to get to home from second. Leo was the next batter and sent the LIU-Post offering over the fence in dead center to push Adelphi's cushion to five runs, 5-0.
Adelphi's sixth and final run came in the top of the fourth when Wink scored on another LIU-Post error, putting the Pioneers in a six run hole, 6-0, with three and a half innings to play. That was more then enough offensive help for
Laurin Watts, who tossed a complete game shut out, going seven innings and striking out 10 batters, while giving up six hits and walking none for her sixth win of the year.
Dorko and Binstock were both 2-4 with a run scored, while Leo was 1-3 with a team high three RBI.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, March 14 when they conclude their Florida trip with a double header against St. Cloud State at 9:00 am.
