Alaska, AK - The Adelphi University volleyball team played the third of four matches at the SpringHill Suites Invitational on Saturday, September 8 on the campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage against Dixie State. The Panthers fell in straight sets to the Red Storm, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, the loss drops Adelphi to 3-4 on the season.
Kaitlyn DeStefano led the offensive charge with eight kills, while
Samantha Rico had seven and
Emily Dorko,
Colleen Raga and
Samantha Breidenbach each chipped in five. Defensively,
Bianca Hernandez had a team-high 14 digs and
Alexandra Kahen added nine, while
Katie Bryson and
Alayna Jackson split time at the setter position, notching 16 and 13 assists respectively.
In what would become a common occurance in the contest, Dixie State charged out to a 7-1 lead in game one, but the Panthers responded with a 9-3 run, capped by a Kahen kill to knot the game at 10. After five more ties, the last coming at 18 all, the Red Storm used a 7-3 flourish to take game one, 25-20.
The Red Storm had a 6-1 lead in the early going of the second game, but another Adelphi rally, this one punctuated with a Breidenbach kill, tied the action at nine. Dixie would respond by taking a 17-10 lead, but the Panthers would not go away, out scoring the Red Storm, 11-7 to get within three points, 24-21 with the serve. However, a Dixie State kill ended the Panther rally, 25-21.
The third game saw Adelphi fall behind again, this time by the score of 5-1and in what was typical Adelphi fashion the Brown and Gold bounced back quickly, pulling even at seven all. A very back and forth third game would see ten more ties, the final coming at 21-21 on a Dorko kill, but Dixie State would score the final four points of the contest to take the game and the match, 25-21.
The Panthers will return to action in the consolation game of the SpringHill Suites Invitational at 5:00 pm AST in Anchorage, Alaska.
