Volleyball Outlasts Pace in Five Sets, Keeps Streak Alive

Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team used extra points in the fifth set to open the Northeast 10 Conference slate with a win, defeating Pace University on Tuesday evening.

Series History:
  • Adelphi keeps its win streak against the Setters alive, marking its 12th consecutive win and pushing into a decade of victories.
  • The Panthers are 27-5 all-time against Pace, dating back to the 2002 season.
Highlights:
  • Madeleine Chaapel posted a team-leading 19 kills, while Melana Bigelow and Mackenzie Casey added 16 and 12, respectively. The former pair combined for 12 digs.
  • Ana Carolina Westerich paced the attack with 39 assists, adding 12 digs of her own. Newcomers Katie Waterman and Reese Brunken chipped in 12 and 16 digs, respectively as the pack was led by Ada Isik who recorded 31.
  • Adelphi's third set was their best of the match, as the team posted a .273 team hitting percentage, while the Cats also only committed one error in the second frame to pick up their first set win.
How It Happened:
  • A narrow first set went to the home team (5-7, 0-1 NE10) 25-23, after being tied at 23-all late in the opener.
  • Despite a pair of miscues to lose the first, the Panthers turned the errors into momentum to steal the second frame 25-17. Adelphi erased a five-point deficit in the early going, using a Katie Brokes serving streak that lasted 11 points. In the stretch she accounted for a pair of service aces as Bigelow and Casey could not be stopped.
  • Another come from behind win highlighted the third set, when Adelphi was down 5-8. After battling back and forth, Chaapel notched a kill to put the Cats in the lead for good at 20-19, sending the visitors on a four-point run. Another kills from Casey slammed the door to put the Panthers up 2-0 in the match.
  • A flipped script handed the hosts the fourth set by an identical score to the third, 25-21, putting all the marbles in the fifth set. The teams have only ever played to a fifth set on two other meetings, both resulting in Adelphi victories.
  • Pace jumped out to a commanding 6-2 lead, using a pair of big stops at the net, but a pair of Isik service aces and a stop from Adelphi blockers put the game back even at six-all.
  • Trading runs, the Setters got to double-digits first, leading 11-9, but back to back kills from Casey gave the Panthers a late 13-12 advantage. The Brown and Gold saw set/match point four more times in the ensuing seven points, and it took a solo block from Maya Meyers and combined block with Chaapel to give Adelphi the 18-16 set five victory.
Up Next:
  • Head Coach Danielle MacKnight and her squad are back on the bus for a weekend trip to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley University on Saturday, Oct. 3. Opening serve is set for 1:00 p.m. inside the Dana Center.
