Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Dowling College, 2-0 and 1-0, in non-conference action at Janet L. Ficke Field on Monday. The Golden Lions rode the arm of ace Jessie Stavola, who spun a pair of complete-game shutout victories and piled up a staggering 27 strikeouts in 14 innings of work. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 21-14-1 overall, while Dowling improves to 19-10.
In game one, Stavola fired a complete game two-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts. The Golden Lions ace surrendered just a pair of bunt singles to
Emily Dorko, who also swiped three bases and was the only Panther to reach scoring position in the first game.
Dowling got on the board in the top of the first after Crystal Tarango led off with a single up the middle and came around on a throwing error. Amber O'Malley then scored on a Jamie Laird sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 after one half inning, and that would be all the Golden Lions would need as Stavola cruised through the Panthers lineup, fanning seven of the first nine batters who dug in and facing just three over the minimum.
Minus a pair of Adelphi defensive miscues in the first, starting pitcher
Devon Kelly settled in and silenced the Dowling bats for six innings, retiring 13 straight batters including seven consecutive groundouts. Kelly scattered four hits and finished with two strikeouts without allowing an earned run.
Game two started where the opener left off, and proved to be another true pitchers' duel as Stavola took the hill again against Adelphi's
Laurin Watts, who held strong in the complete game loss with one run allowed on five hits and four strikeouts. Stavola prevailed again, however, giving up three hits and cashing in 11 K's.
Dowling threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs on a single, error and a walk, but Watts ended the threat by coaxing a lineout to short. The Panthers had a prime scoring chance as well in the bottom half of the inning.
Jaclyn Binstock and
Meghan Heiser poked singles to put runners on the corners with one out, but a failed suicide squeeze attempt and a swinging strikeout left a pair stranded and kept the game scoreless through four.
The Golden Lions finally cracked the tie on Crystal Tarango's RBI triple off the center field wall, plating Krystil Hofmann and giving Dowling its first runs since the first inning of game one. The visitors would cling to that lead the rest of the way, riding Stavola's second dominant performance of the day to a 1-0 win to complete the sweep.
The Panthers return to league action on Wednesday when they host The College of Saint Rose for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
