Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to the 21st ranked Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Sunday, March 25 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers dropped a very tight first game, 3-0 and then were out hit in a 5-1 game two loss. The losses bring Adelphi's overall record to 12-9-1 and they even their NE-10 record at 3-3, while Southern CT improves to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Game One
Adelphi and Southern CT worked a pitchers dual threw four innings as the Panthers
Devon Kelly gave up just three hits in the first four frames. In the fifth inning the Owls took advantage of three hits, putting two runs on the board, 2-0. In the bottom of thet inning the Brown and Gold loaded the bases for
Amanda Krier, but a pop out ensued ending the threat.
After a scoreless sixth, Southern CT added another run in the top of the seventh, but
Katie Andrews got a line out and then struck out the final batter of the seventh for the Owls, leaving three on the bases. The Panthers were set down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Owls a, 3-0 decision.
Kelly went 6.1 innings for Adelphi, giving up eight hits, striking out four, walking four and allowing three runs in her fourth loss of the season, while Andrews threw 0.2 innings and struck out one. Offensively,
Meghan Heiser continued her hot play, going 2-3 while
Heather Salerno,
Jaclyn Binstock,
Victoria Wink and
Kayla Rieger were all 1-3.
Game Two
Southern CT started fast in game two, scoring two runs on the three hits in the top of the first and then added three more in the top of the third, including tw on a two run home run, taking an early, 5-0 lead. Adelphi rallied late, getting one run back on a Wink double to center that scored
Jeanine Leo, who doubled to left, 5-1. The Panthers would then put runners on first and third with two outs, but could not take advantage.
The Panthers kept the momentum going in the sixth and seventh, getting one hit in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but were unable to put anymore runs on the board, falling 5-1.
Laurin Watts took the loss, falling to 3-4 after pitching three innings, striking out one and giving up six hits, while Andrews came on for four innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Offensively the Panthers managed seven hits, all by different players, as
Emily Dorko, Heiser, Binstock, Leo, Wink, Rieger and Andrews all recorded hits.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 when they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for a 3:00 pm meeting with AIC.
