Adelphi Splits on Final Day in Florida

The Panthers topped Tiffin, 8-4 and then fell to Indianapolis, 8-0.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Florida - On their final day in Florida, the Adelphi University softball team came away with a split, doubling up Tiffin, 8-4 before falling to #6 Indianapolis, 8-0. With the 1-1 record on the day, the Panthers close out their Florida trip with an overall record of 7-4-1.

Adelphi vs. Tiffin

The Dragons got things started in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on a double down the right field line that scored two runners, who had reached on singles through the left side of the infield, 2-0. Adelphi halved the Tiffin lead in the top of the second when Amy Ogden, who was pinch running for Amanda Krier, scored on a Katie Andrews steal attempt, 2-1.

Then the Panthers blew the game wide open in the top of the third, with five runs, giving Adelphi a 6-2 bulge. Kayla Rieger and Emily Dorko got things started, as they both singled and were moved over by  Heather Salerno sacrifice bunt. Two runs were scored on a Krier double, giving the Brown and Gold their first lead of the game, 3-2. A Meghan Heiser single to left would plate Krier and a Katie Andrews triple down the left field line would score Jaclyn Binstock and Elizabeth Lindner, accounting for Adelphi's 6-2 lead.

An inning later Adelphi hung two more runs on the Dragons, when Krier sent a shot to center field, scoring Salerno and Dorko, giving the Panthers their final total of eight runs. Tiffin would attempt a rally in the bottom of the fourth, but could muster just two runs as Laurin Watts struck out the final batter of the inning, leaving three Dragons stranded on the bases.

Krier was the dominant force on offense, going 2-3 with four RBI and a run scored, while Dorko was 2-4 with two runs scored in the win. Andrews also had a good day at the plate, going 1-3 with two RBI.

Watts threw seven strong innings, giving up two earned runs, stroking out seven and walking four to pick up her second victory of the year.

Adelphi vs. Indianapolis

Adelphi and Indianapolis played six innings of scoreless softball, as the Panthers got out of two bases loaded situations in the first three innings. The first coming in the bottom of the first, as Devon Kelly induced a line out and the second in the top of the third, as Kelly ended the inning with a strike out.

However, Adelphi also came up empty in the early innings, stranding two runners in the top of the first and a single base runner in the top of the fourth and fifth. The Panthers luck finally came to an end in the top of the seventh as the Grey Hounds put eight runs on the board, three on a home run over the left field fence.

The Brown and Gold tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Binstock led off the inning with a single and Dorko followed with a two out bunt single, giving Adelphi two base runners. Unfortunately, Salerno popped out, ending Adelphi's rally attempt and giving Indianapolis a, 8-0 victory.

Kelly was creadited with the loss and tossed six innings of softball, allowing five runs, striking out three, walking three and giving up 11 hits. Andrews threw one inning of relief, struck out one, walked one and gave up three runs.

Offensively, the Panthers had six hits, four of which came from Dorko and Krier. Dorko was 2-4, while Krier was 2-2 with a walk.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 17 when they travel to Bloomfield, New Jersey for a noon meeting with Bloomfield College.
