Volleyball Closes Out Valdosta Tourney, 2-2

The Panthers dropped their match with Valdosta State, but swept Albany State.

The Adelphi University volleyball team closed out play at the Valdosta State Tournament on Saturday, September 3 with contests against host Valdosta State and Albany State. The Panthers picked up a straight sets win over Albany State in the first game of the day, 3-0 but fell to the host school, 3-0 in their final match of the tournament.

The Panthers took a three set match from Albany State, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-18. Adelphi's offense was clicking in all three games of the contest, as the Brown and Gold committed just 10 total attack errors and hit no lower then .206, including posting an attack percentage of .412 in the second game.

Both Chelsea Overholt and Haley Blunt saw the court well, collecting 12 kills each, while Erika Loomer had 27 assists. Defensively, Bree Popham had 12 digs and Overholt added nine in the win, while Patawe Simms had three service aces.

Adelphi vs. Valdosta State
Despite losing in three straight games, the Panthers did not make it easy on Valdosta State, pushing the host school into overtime in game one, 27-25. Adelphi then dropped the second game, 25-18, but rallied in the third game, pushing Valdosta to the edge before falling 25-23.

Patawe Simms had nine kills in the loss, while Emily Dorko and Chelsea Overholt chipped in six kills apiece. Katie Bryson had 22 assists and Erika Loomer added 11, while Bianca Hernandez led the defense with 12 digs and Overholt collected 10. 

Adelphi will return to action on September 13 when they play host to Long Island rival Dowling College at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
