Garden City, N.Y. –
Earlier today, the women's soccer team opened up the 2011 campaign against the Rams of Philadelphia University at home on Motamed Field. The Panthers got on the board with two quick goals within the first ten minutes of the game to take the early lead. Philadelphia would cut the lead in half, but a late goal gave the Panthers a 3-1 victory. With the win, Adelphi moves to 1-0 while the Rams drop to 0-1.

Just 1:43 into the game, Kaitlin Monteith received a pass from teammate Aimee Goldstein and sailed a shot past Ram keeper, Keli Kowalewski to put Adelphi on the board first. Less than ten minutes later, Donna Liotine sent the ball in off of a corner and senior Danielle Bottaro gained control of it a few yards out and beat Kowalewski to notch the second goal of the game. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of the Panthers at the end of the half.

Just seven minutes into the second half, the Rams got on the board as Kristen Ferguson gained possession of the ball and managed to tap it through traffic and past keeper Dorothy Connolly to cut the lead in half.

Less than a minute later, the Panthers almost got their lead back to two when Emily Masiello received a pass from midfield and sent the ball into the net, but it was called off as the referee signaled for offsides. They had another chance in the 70th minute when Alison Gronenthal dribbled down the right side and sent a cross toward the net, but was batted away by Erin Walter.

With less than 16 minutes to go, Sarah Cote found herself with a clear shot on goal, but a diving save by Kowalewski kept the Panthers at bay. With just over seven minutes left in the game, the Panthers added an insurance goal when Gronenthal scored on a feed from Amber Ingargiola to put the Panthers up by two.

Connolly made five saves as she picked up the win while Kowalewski made three saves in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, September 9 when they host the Warriors of Merrimack College at Motamed Field for their first Northeast-10 Conference game of the season. The contest is slated for a 7:00pm start.
