The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday, Spetember 24 to take on Northeast-10 opponent AIC. The Panthers weathered a close first game, 25-21 and then found their groove, winning games two and three, 25-18 and 25-15 to secure a fifth straight victory. With the 3-0 win, Adelphi improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10, while AIC falls to 3-9 and 1-2 in conference.
The offense was led by
Patawe Simms and
Kaitlyn DeStefano, who had nine and seven kills respectively, while
Chelsea Overholt chipped in six. Defensively,
Bianca Hernandez had a team-high 12 digs and
Alexandra Kahen added nine, as
Erika Loomer led the Panthers with 20 assists.
The host Yellowjackets took an early 5-3 lead in game one, but Adelphi answered with a 3-1 run to knot the action at six. Play would remain tight, until AIC turned a 16-16 tie into a 19-16 lead. The Panthers scored 8 of the next nine points to put a 24-20 strangle hold on game one and would eventually secure a 25-21 win.
The Yellowjackets again led early in game two, striking out to a 11-6 lead. The Brown and Gold battled back again, this time using a 11-2 run to take a four point edge, 17-13. AIC would sneak back within two points, 20-18, but would get no closer, falling 25-18.
The third game was tight early, seeing five ties, including at 7-7. However, a DeStefano kill, sparked a 7-0 run that gave Adelphi double the score of AIC, 14-7. The Panther lead would hold up, as Adelphi's defense allowed the Yellojackets no closer then four the rest of the way, picking up a 25-15 victory.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 27 when they play host to cross island rival, C.W. Post at 7:00 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
