Adelphi vs. Fort Valley State
The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Valdosta, Georgia to open the 2011 season at the Valdosta Tournament and faced off against Barry University and Fort Valley State on day one. The Panthers fell to Barry, 3-0 in the first game of the day, but bounced Fort Valley State, 3-0 to close the day with a 1-1 record.
Adelphi vs. Barry
Adelphi dropped a tight three set match to Barry, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21. The Panthers trailed 18-12 towards the tail end of the first game, but out scored Barry, 9-5 to pull within two point, 23-21 before falling 25-23. In game two action Adelphi was again close late, 19-17, before another Barry push closed the door, 25-20 and game three was more of the same as Adelphi could not overcome a 19-12 deficit, falling 25-21.
Patawe Simms led the attack with 10 kills, while
Chelsea Overholt chipped in seven and
Erika Loomer had 23 assists. Defensively,
Bianca Hernandez was the spark with 17 digs.
Adelphi vs. Fort Valley State
The second match of the day was all Adelphi from the start, as the Panthers took three straight games, 25-11, 25-12 and 25-3. Adelphi out scored Fort Valley, 10-3 in game one on the way to a 25-11 victory, but game two was a tighter affair as Fort Valley trailed by just three, 12-9 mid way through the action. However, a late Adelphi effort put the game out of reach, as the Panthers closed with a 13-3 run. The final game of the match saw the Brown and Gold sprint out to a 10-0 lead on the way to a 25-3 win.
Both
Chelsea Overholt and
Emily Dorko had six kills in the win, while
Kaitlyn DeStefano had five and
Katie Bryson collected 21 assists.
Bree Popham led the defensive effort with a team-high 13 digs.
Adelphi closes out play at the Valdosta Tournament on Saturday, September 3 with games against host Valdosta State and Albany State.
