Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier today, the #9 field hockey team hosted the reigning national champions, #3 UMass Lowell Riverhawks. UML got on the board first with a goal in the 23rd minute and then set the Panthers back 2-0 in the 44th minute. Adelphi rallied to cut the lead in half, making it a 2-1 game, but despite a valiant effort, was kept at bay, resulting in a loss. The Panther's record now stands at 4-3, 1-0, NE-10 while UML moves to 5-1, 0-0 NE-10.
From the start, the Panthers controlled most of the game with the forwards and midfielders testing the defense of the Riverhawks early on and often. A series of consecutive penalty corners in the 17th minute gave the Panthers a few opportunities to strike first, but UML stood their ground behind their goalie, Malanie Hopkins.
At 22:38, the Riverhawk's Sarah Wilcox put her team on the scoreboard first when she gained possession of a deflected pass inside Panther territory and sent a shot past
Lucia Vigliotti to give UML a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, just eight and a half minutes in, UML struck again, this time on an unassisted Ali Ferraro goal, putting Adelphi in a 2-0 hole. However, their offense continued to be aggressive, playing most of the remaining minutes in UML territory and rattling off shot after shot. It was not until the 64:47 mark when the Panthers got on the board courtesy of a
Cassie Cabral goal on a
Jeanette Heimerle assist to cut the lead in half.
With time winding down, Adelphi continued to press with last minute attempts on goal, but could not manage to even the score as they would suffer their third loss of the year.
The Panthers outshot UML 25-8 and had 17 penalty corners compared to their counterpart's nine. Vigliotti made four saves in the loss while Hopkins made 10.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, September 20 when they host the Yellow Jackets of American International in a non-conference matchup at Motamed Field. The game is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
