Softball Drops Twinbill to St. Anselm

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Sunday, April 17. The Panthers dropped a hard fought contest, 2-1 in game one and were out hit in game two, 10-5. With the losses Adelphi falls to 16-20 overall and 10-8 in the NE-10.

Game One
The first four innings of game one was a pitchers dual, as both teams were held scoreless. The Hawks led off the fifth inning with a solo home run, getting the first run of the game and taking a, 1-0 lead. Saint Anselm extended their lead in the sixth, taking advantage of three hits to push the advantage to 2-0.

The Panthers made things interesting, pulling to within one run on a Jeanine Leo bomb with one out, but could get no closer then 2-1. Leighann Bell pitched a sterling seven innings, striking out five and giving up just seven hits in the loss, while Leo made Adelphi's lone hit of the game count.

Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader was a slugfest, as the teams combined for 15 runs of offense. The Hawks got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first on two wild pitches from Katie Andrews. The action settled down from there, with scoreless softball until Adelphi and Saint Anselm traded runs in the fourth, which kept the Hawks on top, 3-1.

The Panthers run came off of an Andrews drive right center, while Saint Anselm took advantage of a single up the middle. After a spotless fifth inning the offense exploded, with seven runs in the sixth. The Hawks took advantage of two Adelphi errors and three hits to put four runs on the board and extend their lead to 7-1.

Adelphi got three of the four runs back in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a Deandra Leo double, a Jeanine Leo ground out that scored a run and another Andrews drive, making the count 7-4. The Hawks pushed the lead back to six with three runs in the top of the seventh on two doubles, while Adelphi managed one run in the bottom of the seventh, falling 10-5.

Deandra Leo and Andrews led the way at the plate for Adelphi as both players went 3-4, Andrews with two RBI, while Leo had one RBI and two runs scored. Amanda Krier also swung a good bat, going 2-4.

Four pitchers combined in the loss, with Marisa Romeo throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Bell returned to give 1.1 innings of relief, allowing a single run.

Adelphi returns to action on Monday, April 18 when they play host to Molloy College at 3:00 pm in Garden City.
