Albany, N.Y. – This afternoon, the #8 seeded women's soccer team took on the top seeded, and #15 nationally ranked Golden Knights of St. Rose in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Three first half goals put Adelphi in a deep enough hole in which they would not be able to climb out of. St. Rose tacked on another second half score to put an end to Adelphi's post season run. With the loss, the Panthers move to 8-8-1, 7-7-1 NE-10 record while the Golden Knights advance on with a record of 17-1-1, 12-0-1 NE-10.
Adelphi only managed to get three shots in the first half, two from
Emily Masiello, one of which was on target but saved, while teammate
Kim Volinski accounted for the third. Saint Rose tallied 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes and connected on three of four on goal. It was Brittany Godin who began Saint Rose's run with an unassisted goal in the 34
th minute.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Golden Knights struck yet again on two occasions. Christina Cuffari accounted for the assist on teammate Carmelina Puopolo's goal in the 42
nd minute, and then notched one of her own in the final 27 seconds of the half to put Adelphi in a 3-0 deficit.
Despite the Panther offense picking up just a bit, it was not enough to erase the shortage.
Donna Liotine and
Sarah Cote tried their attempts on goal as the only other players to get shots off, but came up empty handed. Their counterparts would add one more goal before the end of 90 minutes on a one timer by the duo of Kimberly Morton and Allison Schmidt.
Adelphi posted eight shots on the night and had no corner kicks while St. Rose was credited with 18 shots and six corners.
Sam Whitney made five saves in the loss.
The Panthers will have to wait until the NCAA selection show on Monday, November 7 when they announce the field that will participate in the National Championship Tournament. In the most recent Regional Polls, Adelphi sat in eighth.
