Garden City, N.Y. – The men's soccer team played host to the Lancers of Longwood in their second Atlantic Soccer Conference game of the season. After a scoreless first half, the Lancers got on the board first off of a successful penalty kick, but the Panthers struck back with two consecutive goals to seal the 2-1 victory. With the win, the Panthers move to 4-5-1, 2-0 ASC while the Lancers' record stands at 6-5-1, 0-1 ASC.

Within the opening 11 minutes, Longwood had their first opportunity when Michael Tegler, from the right side, sent what was meant to be a cross but hit the left post. Teammate Nick Surkamp picked up the loose ball and fired a shot point blank in front of the net, but had too much power on it as it sailed high.

The Panthers had their chance in the middle of the first half when sophomore Nicholas Costa took a free kick from just outside the box on the right side and sent a quick pass to Dan Larenius who made his way toward the net and sent a cross but was broken up by the Lancer defense.

At the conclusion of 45 minutes, Longwood led in shots, 4-2 and had three corner kicks compared to Adelphi's one.

In the 56th minute, a handball on Adelphi in the box set the stage for a Longwood penalty kick. Surkamp lined up and successfully sent a shot past keeper Chris Herrera toward the bottom left corner to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers came back with less than 17 minutes left to play when Brandon Stoneham sent a cross from the left side and connected with teammate James Diana who found the back of the net from five yards out, knotting the game at one.

Less than eight minutes later, Greg Mallia beat two Longwood defenders and created just enough space to get a shot off which resulted in the go ahead goal, putting his team up 2-1.

Herrera and his counterpart, Joel Helmick each made two saves on the day.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, October 11 when they take on the Terapins of the University of Maryland in College Park. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start.
