Volleyball Slows The Setters, 3-1

The Panthers snapped Pace's 11 game win streak.

The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Pace University in a Northeast-10 showdown on Tuesday, October 4 in the Center for Recreation and Sports. The Panthers rallied from a 1-0 hole to pick up a 3-1 win (19-25, 27-25, 25-17 and 25-23), snapping the Setter's 11 game win streak. With the victory Adelphi improves to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10, while Pace falls to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Haley Blunt led the Panthers with a career-high 15 kills, while Emily Dorko added 12 and Kaitlyn DeStefano nine. Katie Bryson had a game-high 41 assists and teammate Bianca Hernandez contrbuted a game-high 21 digs. As a team the Panthers had 11 total blocks, with DeStefano posting two solo blocks and three block assists.

The first half of game one was close, with the action knotted at eight apiece before a 6-1 Pace run blew the action open and gave the Setters a 14-9 lead on the way to a 25-19 victory. The second game looked to be going in a similar direction as the game was tied at 10 and a 5-0 Pace run put the Setters on top, 15-10. But, this time Adelphi battled back, eventually tying the game at 23, 24 and 25 when back-to-back kills from Blunt gave the Panthers a 27-25 win.

Pace would lead again in game three, holding a 12-9 advantage, when a 6-0 Adelphi run put the Panthers up three, 15-12. From there the Brown and Gold would score 10 of the final 15 points, securing a 25-17 win. The fourth game looked to be all Adelphi as the Panthers pushed out to a 12-7 lead. However, the Setters had other ideas, hanging around and eventually tying the contest at 16 on a Brooke Speyerer kill. The contest would go back and forth again at the point, with ties at 17, 20 and 21. Adelphi led, 24-22 and had the serve when a Melanie Pavels kill, pulled Pace to within one, 24-23, but Emily Dorko shut the door on the next point, giving Adelphi a 25-23 victory and the game with a kill.

Adelphi returns to action on when they host LeMoyne College and Queens College at 11 am and 2 pm on Saturday, October 8 in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
