Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the women's soccer team hosted the Chargers of the University of New Haven in their final home stand of the 2011 regular season. Despite a combine 29 shots between the two, it was New Haven that was able to slip one past the Panther defense in the second half for the win. In defeat, Adelphi drops to 8-7, 6-7 NE-10 while the Chargers move to 8-8, 6-8 NE-10.
Less than 10 minutes into the game, UNH threatened when Lucy Fracisco streaked down the left side and managed to get a shot off in the midst of two defenders, but the attempt nipped the right goal post and deflected back in to play, ending the threat.
In a string of plays within a minute apart, the Panthers had their own scoring opportunities. The first was by
Kim Volinski, but her near break-away was halted by keeper Kim Taylor as she came up in the box and broke up the play. In the next series, a corner kick taken by
Donna Liotine resulted in a
Danielle Bottaro header, but her effort was just a few inches off the mark, hitting the left goal post.
The first half proved to be quite busy on each end with the Panthers taking five shots to UNH's eight.
In the second half, with the clock reading 71:46, Brenna Weidman sent in a corner, and in an unfortunate turn of events, was deflected off a Panther defender and into their own goal, allowing UNH to go ahead, 1-0.
Alison Gronenthal, Volinski,
Lauren Lucas,
Sarah Cote and
Meghan Carey all managed to take shots in the final 19 minutes of the game, but were unable to connect as time ran down in favor of the Chargers.
Adelphi posted 14 shots on goal and had six corners while the Chargers one upped them in shots with 15 but took one less corner with five opportunities. Whitney saved a season high 10 shots between the pipes while her counterpart made seven.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 29 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire to take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce in their final regular season game of the season. First kick is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
