Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team marched to a 3-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Bentley University at Motamed Field on Saturday. Freshman
Donna Liotine netted her first collegiate goal on a first-half penalty kick that proved to be the game winner to lift the Panthers to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in NE-10 play.
Adelphi saw plenty of offensive opportunities early on, including a well-placed crossing pass in the opening minute from
Emily Masiello from the left goal line that bounced past two Panthers who could not connect for a shot on goal. Masiello had another chance in the 41st minute when she trapped a leading pass from
Sally Leahy and beat Bentley goalie Christiana Hynds to a 50/50 ball, but touched too hard and sent the ball out of bounds before she could muster a shot.
The Panthers finally converted after senior
Kim Volinski beat her defender to a high lofted ball but was prompty fouled by Hynds who slid in hard to break up the way. Adelphi Head Coach
Chris Armas selected Liotine to take the ensuing penalty kick, and she let loose with a rocket into the bottom right corner to put the Panthers up 1-0 with 12:17 to play in the first half.
Senior
Lauren Lucas widened the gap early in the second half when she trapped Liotine's corner kick with her back to the net and spun around to beat Hynds to the left side and make it 2-0 in favor of Adelphi. Ten minutes later, Gronenthal rushed past the defense, dribbled past the 18-yard line and sliced a shot to the right side but could not get the ball past Hynds who made a miraculous diving save.
Gronenthal would get redeption in the 77th minute when she gathered a long pass from
Meghan Carey, seared past the last Bentley defender and made one crossover move to open up a shooting lane. Gronenthal tapped in an easy shot after Hynds overcommitted to make it 3-0.
Freshman goalie
Sam Whitney went largely unchallenged and made four saves in the win, while Hynds stopped seven shots.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for an NE-10 game at 7 p.m.
