Baseball Gives Up Nine Late Runs In 11-7 Loss At Assumption

The #16 Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on Assumption College this afternoon. Adelphi had a 5-2 lead after six innings, only to lose to the Greyhounds, 11-7. The win improves Assumption to 19-13 and 8-6 in the league, while Adelphi falls to 23-8 and 9-4.

For the Panthers, junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior Chris Weidlein went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore Justin Farnum also drove in two runs. Senior Mike Bartlett took the no-decision, giving up six runs and striking out 10 in 6.1 innings of work. 

Adelphi would score their first run in the top of the first when senior Justin Ciamillo drove in McCarren with an RBI ground out to short. McCarren led off the game with a triple to center. The Panthers would get two runs in the second on RBI single's from junior Trevor Thorstensen and McCarren. 

Drew Dombkowski would get the Greyhounds on the board in the fourth with an RBI single to left field. Mike Foley would then plate Wally Derosier to cut the Panther lead to 3-2. 

Adelphi would get those two runs back in the top of the sixth when Farnum drove in Weidlein with a sacrifice fly, followed by McCarren drawing a bases loaded walk. 

After two more Panther runs in the top half of the seventh, Assumption blew the game wide open, scoring nine runs in two innings. 

Assumption came out and poured on five runs on AU in the bottom of the seventh. A Dombkowski three-run home run to right field tied the score at 7-7. In the eighth, the Greyhounds would get four runs on three hits highlighted by a Shane Keddy two-run double to center field. 

For the Greyhounds, Dombkowski went 3-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored and a home run, while Derek Migrants went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Matt Metcalf picked up the win, giving up one hit in two innings of relief. 

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they travel to Albany, New York to take on the College of St. Rose at 3:30 p.m.
