Baseball Takes Two From UMass Lowell, 6-5, And 6-3

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the River Hawks of UMass Lowell this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Adelphi took game one in 10 innings, 6-5, followed by a 6-3 victory in game two. Adelphi improves 21-7 and 8-3 in the Northeast-10, while UMass Lowell falls to 18-14 and 7-8.

Game 1

For the Panthers, senior Chris Weidlein went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while classmate Anthony Anzalone finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Keith Couch took the no-decision, throwing eight innings and striking out six, while senior Jason Intelisano struck out two in one inning of work for the win.

UMass Lowell came out and scored three early runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. The inning was highlighted with a T.J. Leary two-run double to center. The Panthers would come back in the bottom of the second and add a run, when sophomore Craig Matteo drew a bases loaded walk. AU would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the third with a sacrifice fly from sophomore T.J. Humrich.

In the top of the fifth, the River Hawks would get two more runs with the first on a sacrifice fly from Sean Burns. Cam Kneeland would then deliver an RBI single for the second run, giving UML a 5-3 lead.

After scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 5-5, Matteo plated Anzalone with an RBI single for the game-winning run.

For the River Hawks, Kneeland went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Leary went 1-for-3 with two driven in. Leathersich collected the no-decision, striking out eight batters in six innings of work.

Game 2

For the Panthers, sophomore Justin Farnum went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-5 with a run scored at the lead-off spot. Junior Robert Nixon collected the complete game win, giving up three runs and striking out five.

The Panthers opened the scoring with one run in the bottom half of the first inning when Farnum drove in McCarren with an RBI single to right field. The River Hawks then matched the Panthers in the top of the second off an RBI single from Jordan Silva.

The River Hawks would then take a 3-2 lead after a two-run sixth inning. Adelphi would put the game away in the bottom half of the seventh inning, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from senior Justin Ciamillo.

Both teams collected eight hits, while UMass Lowell committed four errors defensively.

For the River Hawks, Kneeland finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Jared Notagiacomo went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dustin Ramey suffered the tough loss, striking out seven in seven innings and giving up just one earned run.

The Panthers return to action at home tomorrow when they host the College of St. Rose in a conference doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
