Men's Soccer Enter The Postseason With a Win Over NJIT, 1-0

Oct. 29, 2006

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's soccer team hosted NJIT in the final game of the regular season on Sunday, October 29. The Panthers had plenty of chances, out shooting the Highlanders 17-7 and broke through in the second half to secure a 1-0 win. With the win, Adelphi finishes the regular season unbeaten in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) at 5-0-1 and run their overall record to 9-6-1. NJIT fell to 3-11-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.

The Panthers dictated play for the majority of the first half, holding an edge in shots (10-3) and corner kicks (4-2), but could not capitalize, entering the half deadlocked at 0-0. The Highlanders created the first quality opportunity of the second half when Fernando Londono found himself one-on-one with Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) with 24 minutes left in the game. However, defenders Kris Frick (Warwick, Bermuda) and Marlon Bennett (Portmore, Jamaica) caught Londono from behind and sent the ball harmlessly over the end line.

Adelphi got their chance in the 83rd minute and finished it. Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.) received a ball on the right flank and moved toward the touchline. Philippou then sent a cross into the box and over the head of NJIT goalkeeper Collin Cunning, where Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) was waiting. Forman headed the ball into the back of the Highlander net for his fourth goal of the season, giving the Panthers a 1-0 victory.

Hurley made two saves to record his sixth shutout of the season, while Josh Osit made three saves for NJIT in the first half and Cunning picked up one in the second half.

Adelphi returns to action on Friday, November 3 when they play host to Philadelphia University in the first round of the ASC tournament. The top-seeded Panthers will face off with the fourth seeded Rams at 11 am, followed by #2 Hartwick against #3 Florida Atlantic University.
