Women's Soccer Shuts Out Assumption for First Conference Win

Worcester, Mass. – Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team were back on the pitch Sunday night to take on Assumption for their Northeast 10 Conference opener.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (4-1-1, 1-0-0 NE10) moves to 11-3-4 against Assumption since September 2008. The last matchup between the pair was a 2-1 Panther victory in Garden City where Kayleigh Goodrich and Madison Apicella both scored. Adelphi now carries a six-game win streak against the Greyhounds.

Highlights:

  • Goodrich led the team with nine shots and scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute, her league-leading ninth of the season.
  • Maddy Catalanotti posted her first clean sheet as a Panther and made four saves.
  • Adelphi outshot Assumption 19-16.

How It Happened:

  • Assumption started the offensive charge for the game, recording the first three shots of the evening before Adelphi got its first in the 18th minute.
  • Adelphi pushed forward in the opening half hour but had a flurry of shots blocked by the Greyhound defense.
  • Both teams had opportunities to score in the opening half, but neither could convert as the game was scoreless after 45 minutes.
  • Bethan Solari set the tone for Adelphi's offense in the second period with an early shot that was saved.
  • Just five minutes later, Goodrich put the Panthers on top. The senior received the ball just outside of the box, beat four defenders and placed a perfect shot in the top-right corner.
  • Both teams continued to push forward, with the Panthers controlling most of the possession.
  • Goodrich, Carmen Reinerink, Alexa Piotrowski and Solari all had chances to double the Panther lead, but were stopped.
  • The continued pressure from the offense and staunch defense shut down any chance of Assumption tying the game up, and the Panthers went on to win 1-0.

Up Next:

  • The Adelphi women's soccer team will be back at home on Wednesday at 4:00 PM when it plays host to nationally ranked Franklin Pierce.
