Indianapolis, Ind. – The Adelphi University softball team celebrated exciting news on Monday morning. The Panthers earned the No. 2 seed in the East Region, as announced by the NCAA.
The East Region consists of eight teams split between two sites, with Adelphi welcoming No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 6 Southern New Hampshire and No. 7 Bridgeport to Janet L. Ficke Field this week for a three-day double-elimination tournament.
Of the three teams traveling to Garden City, two are familiar opponents for the Cats. Southern New Hampshire faced Adelphi twice during the Northeast 10 Tournament, while the Panthers swept Bridgeport earlier this season. The lone unfamiliar opponent is St. Thomas Aquinas, which recently captured the ECC Tournament title.
The Cats will open regional play against Bridgeport on Thursday, May 14, at noon. As previously mentioned, the Brown and Gold swept the Purple Knights during the regular season, scoring a combined 17 runs across the two games. During the sweep, Kaitlyn Klepper, Reeghan McCarthy, Faith Wagner, Makayla Comer and Emily Wolfe all recorded multiple RBIs.
St. Thomas Aquinas and Southern New Hampshire will square off in the second game on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., marking the first meeting between the two programs this season.
If the higher seeds prevail in both East Region brackets, the stage could be set for a rematch of the regular-season finale between Adelphi and Franklin Pierce in the Super Regional. Franklin Pierce earned the No. 1 seed, while Caldwell (No. 4), Assumption (No. 5) and Mercy (No. 8) round out the other four-team regional in Rindge, N.H.
General admission for all games at Janet L. Ficke Field will cost $10. Reduced admission prices of $5 will be available for students with a valid ID and senior citizens, while tickets for children ages 2-12 will cost $2.
