#1 Men's Lacrosse Finds 16-6 Victory Over Wilmington in NCAA First Round

Garden City, N.Y. – Strong defense and a near perfect performance at the faceoff X propelled no. 1 Adelphi University men's lacrosse to a 16-6 defeat of no. 8 Wilmington in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Series History
  • Sunday's matchup was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Highlights:
  • Braden Donnellan finished with a team-leading five points, courtesy of one goal and four assists.
  • Alex Titto finished with the team's only hat trick, and added a pair of ground balls, as one of 12 goal-scorers on the afternoon.
  • At the faceoff X, William Greaves finished 16-for-17 with nine ground balls.
How It Happened:
  • As the teams settled in, Wilmington took the first shot at the 12:42 mark, but after a pair of shots from Adelphi's attack, Michael Durnin got the home team on the board at 11:28.
  • Nearly four minutes went by before the home team scored again, as the Panther defense caused a shot clock violation for Wilmington. Ries Bower, who finished with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls lit up the scoreboard on a transition ball, to make it 2-0 Adelphi.
  • The hosts added a pair before the frame expired and rolled their scoring spree into the second quarter, tagging on three more before the Wildcats found a way past Christian Tomei. The eight-seed added another under the minute mark, but just before the Panthers added a pair right before the halftime break.
  • The five-goal stretch extended into the third frame, as the hosts scored the first three of the quarter. Durnin, Danny Fisenne and Ryan Bauco all got in on the scoring action to make it a 10-goal game.
  • Ryan Woodland kept it a double0digit margin with his tally at 1:57 in the third, as Adelphi outscored the Wildcats 4-1.
  • The final frame was even, with a trio of goals on both sides, but the damage had already been done.
