Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team swept Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by an 11-inning battle that ended with a walk-off hit from Tori Parente.
Series History:
- Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 57 times dating back to the 2002 season.
- Adelphi (18-12, 14-2 NE10) entered the day with a 41-16 all-time record against the Owls (12-15, 5-11 NE10).
Game One: Adelphi 6, Southern Connecticut State 5
Highlights:
- Jenna Plue went all 11 innings, striking out 14 and allowing no earned runs.
- Makayla Comer went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
- Parente recorded the game-winning hit while driving in two runs.
- Emily Wolfe tallied two hits in four at-bats.
- Kaitlyn Klepper tripled and drove in two runs.
How it Happened:
- Adelphi got on the board first. Emma Priest led off with a walk, Wolfe singled, and Ellen Tarjan moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Klepper then hit a ground ball to the left side to bring Priest home.
- In the fourth inning, the Panthers took advantage of two free passes issued by the Owls' starter. Comer ripped a single to load the bases before Parente hit a ground ball to the right side to extend the lead.
- Southern Connecticut State's offense was held in check until the seventh inning, when the Owls put together a three-run rally with the help of two Adelphi defensive miscues and a two-run single from Sophia Angiolini to take the lead.
- Comer sparked the response in the bottom of the seventh with a single to left field. After advancing to second on a misplay by the left fielder, Parente moved her to third with a groundout.
- Reeghan McCarthy then delivered a clutch single into right field to tie the game at 3 and send it into extra innings.
- After neither team scored in the eighth inning and the international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the ninth, both teams scratched across a run.
- The Owls made it 4-3 on a sacrifice fly, but the Panthers tied it in the bottom half thanks to a Southern Connecticut State throwing error.
- Both teams added another run in the 10th inning. The Owls used two fly balls to advance and score the placed runner, while Klepper answered with a clutch two-out triple into right-center field to even the score once again.
- In the 11th, Plue kept the Owls off the board after a sacrifice bunt by inducing a pop-up and a groundout.
- Faith Wagner began the inning as the placed runner on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Comer. Parente then lined the first pitch she saw into left field, bringing Wagner home and giving the Panthers a thrilling 6-5 walk-off victory.
Game Two: Adelphi 7, Southern Connecticut 2
Highlights:
- Maddy Moore went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- Wagner was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Priest had two hits in four plate appearances, including a triple, and scored twice.
- Lily Kenney tossed a complete game, allowing two runs while scattering eight hits.
How it Happened:
- The Panthers opened the scoring with a three-run rally in the second inning. Moore singled, and Wagner followed with an RBI double to bring in the first run. Comer then lined a ball into right field that was misplayed, allowing her to circle the bases and give Adelphi a 3-0 lead.
- Southern Connecticut State cut into the lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Christina DeNovellis.
- The Owls added another run in the fifth after a leadoff double and an RBI single two batters later making it 3-2.
- Adelphi answered immediately with a three-run inning of its own. Moore slapped a double down the left field line to score Priest and Klepper, then later crossed the plate on a throwing error by the Owls.
- The Cats added an insurance run in the sixth when Priest laced a triple into right-center field and later scored on a groundout by Ava Hershkovitz.
- Kenney worked around a leadoff single in the seventh inning to complete the sweep.
