Baseball's Win Streak Snapped in 8-4 Loss at Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team traveled up to Pace on Wednesday afternoon for a midweek conference tilt. The Panthers led through seven and a half innings, but a late surge from the Setters gave them an 8-4 win.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (15-12, 11-7 NE10) is now 33-22 against Pace since March 2005. The last meeting between the foes was a 7-2 Setter victory in Garden City on March 31.

Highlights:

How It Happened:

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers opened the scoring in the top of the second. An Evan Carway walk and a Rigogliosi bunt single set up DeMilt, who drove in the Panther first baseman with a single to left-center field.
  • With Kind and Joe O'Toole in a pitcher's duel, the next run was not scored until the top of the fifth.
  • A walk from DeMilt chased O'Toole, and after a Catuosco single moved the freshman to third, McCleary came through with an RBI single to extend the Panther lead to two.
  • Adelphi got on the board again in the sixth after some small ball. A Pace error led to a sacrifice bunt and another DeMilt RBI single to put the Panthers up 3-0.
  • The Brown and Gold bullpen was clean through six, but the seventh inning was when it ran into trouble.
  • Pace struck for two runs to cut the lead to one, then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 8-3 lead.
  • Robinson homered in the top of the ninth, but Adelphi could not sustain any offense as it fell, 8-4.

Up Next:

  • Head coach Mike Gaffney and the Panthers will look to bounce back when they kick off a four-game set with Southern Connecticut State on Saturday. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
