Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#1 Men's Lacrosse Narrowly Escapes #14 Molloy, 10-9

Garden City, N.Y. - In a game where Adelphi didn't take the lead until the fourth quarter, the No. 1 men's lacrosse team held on to secure a 10–9 victory over no. 14 Molloy University on Tuesday evening at Motamed Field.

Series History:
  • Adelphi extends its win streak against the Lions to six, holding an 11-3 all-time record dating back to the 2002 season.
  • Every loss that the Panthers have against Molloy is by one-goal, with identical scores of 13-12.
Highlights:
  • Ryan Bauco returned for a career performance, leading the team with in scoring with four goals. Vincent McDermott was the only other player with a multi-goal game, scoring two and adding one assist.
  • William Greaves finished just over .500 at the faceoff X, going 8-for-15 with five ground balls.
  • Thomas Gentile earned his first victory between the pipes for the Panthers, collecting five saves. Molloy's netminder John Basile may have allowed 10 goals, but picked up 13 saves for the Lions.
How it Happened:
  • Molloy (10-3) had the home team stunned following the opening 15 minutes of action, as they ran up the score to 4-1 after McDermott scored the game's opening tally. The Lions outshot Adelphi 11-5 in the first, and won two more faceoffs to keep the ball in their offensive third.
  • The visitors stretched that lead into the second quarter and still managed to outscore the top-team in Division II, leading 6-2 at the halftime break. Bauco recorded his first of the game and the Panthers' only tally of the frame between a pair of Lion goals, but Adelphi went into the locker room with their largest deficit this season.
  • Facing adversity from the opening whistle, Brian Doherty made a rare connection with Bauco to get things going in the third. Kyle Lewis, Braden Donnellan and Danny Fisenne each netted scores in the home team's four-goal stretch to bring the game even at six-all, but Molloy got in the final word of the quarter.
  • The Lions entered the final frame of regulation with a one-goal lead but it was Bauco again to spark the offensive end. McDermott gave the hosts their first lead of the contest - and eventual gamewinner - at 11:25. A pair of penalties issued to Molloy put Noah Gibson in charge of capitalizing in a man-up possession to stretch the advantage to two.
  • A save and a clear for the visitors saw Noah Hammon score to cut the home team's lead to one, but a miscue allowed Fisenne to find Bauco to make it 10-8 with under four minutes to play.
  • A few back and forth runs eventually ended in Molloy's attacking zone, but time was nearly expired when they took their final shot of the game to come within one, once more.
  • A final faceoff in favor of the Lions was too little too late as the Panthers remain undefeated this season.
Hear from Coach Purdie:
  • "Tonight was a grind and shed light on areas that we need to work on as we move later into the season. I'm proud of the fight that the team put together to pull off a victory. On to the next one."
Up Next:
  • The Panthers will be on the road for their next two games, starting with Assumption University on Saturday, April 11. Opening faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
